An Intersectional, Decolonized Approach

Dr. Sophia Aguirre specializes in working with therapists from diverse backgrounds, including those in marginalized communities such as BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and Latinx populations. Her culturally competent and intersectional approach is grounded in:

  • Intersectionality: We take into account the overlapping systems of oppression that impact therapists’ personal and professional lives, including race, gender, sexual orientation, and class.

  • Empathy and Non-Judgment: As fellow clinicians, we understand the nuanced challenges you face and offer an affirming space for you to be open and vulnerable.

  • Collaborative and Tailored Support: We recognize that therapists have different needs. Whether you're seeking support in managing work-life balance, emotional exhaustion, or professional identity, we tailor our therapeutic approach to your individual journey.

  • Trauma-Informed Care: We recognize that therapists may also carry their own trauma, both personal and vicarious, and we provide tools for healing and managing these experiences.

  • LGBTQIA+ and Sex-Positive Affirmation: Our practice is affirming of diverse identities, including those in non-traditional relationship structures, and we understand the complexities of navigating these in both personal and professional spheres.

  • Professional Insight and Compassionate Care: You deserve care that acknowledges both your role as a healer and your humanity. Our therapists are trained in addressing the specific stressors that come with clinical work.

We also believe that healing must also address the historical and systemic forces that shape our mental health. For therapists, this means not only supporting clients through their personal struggles but also recognizing the ways colonialism, racism, and oppression impact the therapeutic space itself. Our decolonized individual therapy and Process & Consultation Groups for Therapists are designed to provide safe spaces for clinicians to unpack these forces in their own lives and practices. We bring a decolonized lens to our work wherein we move beyond traditional therapeutic models, which often reflect Eurocentric values and norms, to incorporate the lived experiences and cultural contexts of individuals from marginalized communities. For therapists, this means:

  • Affirmation of Identity: we encourage therapists to integrate their full selves—including their cultural, racial, and spiritual identities—into both their personal healing and their therapeutic work with clients.

  • Unpacking Internalized White Supremacy & Colonialism: In our work, we help therapists recognize and unlearn harmful narratives stemming from internalized oppression so that they may reclaim their identities with a sense of empowerment.

  • Addressing Power & Privilege: we provide space to process complex dynamics of power and privilege that often arise in the therapeutic relationships, particularly for BIPOC therapists that work with clients from marginalized identities.

  • Affirming Indigenous & Ancestral Knowledge: Decolonized therapy recognizes the wisdom in ancestral healing practices and encourages therapists to integrate these traditions into their own self-care and client work when relevant.

  • Collective Healing: Recognizing that healing does not happen in isolation, we offer opportunities to connect with other therapists through group therapy or consultation, fostering a sense of community and shared growth.

By offering decolonized services for therapists, Dr. Aguirre helps clinicians not only navigate their own mental health but also deepen their understanding of the broader forces shaping their professional and personal experiences. Together, we work toward creating more liberated, authentic, and compassionate therapeutic spaces for our communities.
