Throughout history, storytelling has been a powerful tool for survival, resistance, and healing in communities of color. Our stories carry the wisdom of our ancestors, the resilience of our families, and the complexity of our lived experiences. At the Aguirre Center for Inclusive Psychotherapy, we recognize that mental health care must honor these narratives, especially in the face of systemic oppression and historical trauma. This is why we embrace Narrative Therapy as a cornerstone of our work with BIPOC clients.
What Is Narrative Therapy?
Narrative Therapy, developed by Michael White and David Epston, is based on the belief that our identities are shaped by the stories we tell about ourselves and the stories that society imposes upon us. For many people of color, dominant cultural narratives often pathologize, erase, or distort our lived experiences. Narrative Therapy helps individuals reclaim their stories, separating themselves from problem-saturated narratives and rewriting them in ways that center their strength, agency, and cultural wisdom.
Why Storytelling Matters for Communities of Color
Reclaiming Our Voices
Many of us have internalized negative messages about who we are and what we are capable of due to racism, colonialism, and other forms of oppression. Narrative Therapy helps clients challenge these harmful narratives and replace them with stories of resilience, survival, and joy.
Connecting to Ancestral Strength
Storytelling is deeply rooted in many BIPOC cultures. Our ancestors passed down knowledge, traditions, and survival strategies through oral histories. In therapy, reconnecting with these ancestral narratives can be a profound source of empowerment and healing.
Resisting Pathologization
Too often, mainstream mental health frameworks view trauma and distress through an individualized, deficit-based lens. Narrative Therapy shifts the focus from "What’s wrong with you?" to "What has happened to you?" and "How have you resisted?" This approach affirms the ways clients have navigated adversity with strength and creativity.
Building Collective Healing
Healing does not happen in isolation. Narrative Therapy can be particularly powerful in group settings, where individuals share their stories, witness each other's struggles and triumphs, and find solidarity in their experiences. This collective storytelling fosters a sense of belonging and reduces the shame that often accompanies trauma.
How We Incorporate Narrative Therapy at the Aguirre Center
At our practice, we integrate Narrative Therapy into individual and group sessions, helping clients:
Identify and challenge oppressive narratives that have shaped their self-perception
Explore alternative narratives that honor their resilience and cultural strengths
Connect with intergenerational stories of survival, love, and joy
Externalize problems, recognizing that struggles like anxiety, depression, and racial trauma do not define who they are
Develop skills to narrate their experiences in a way that fosters self-compassion and growth
Utilize creative mediums such as journaling, poetry, and art to deepen their engagement with personal storytelling
Engage in guided exercises that help them separate their identity from societal stereotypes and harmful expectations
We also recognize the importance of intersectionality in storytelling. As a practice that affirms LGBTQIA+, polyamorous, and other marginalized identities, we support clients in holding space for the multiple, sometimes conflicting, narratives that shape their lives. Additionally, we incorporate culturally relevant storytelling practices from different traditions, ensuring that each client's heritage and background are honored in their therapeutic journey. At our center, we integrate Narrative Therapy into individual and group sessions, helping clients:
Identify and challenge oppressive narratives that have shaped their self-perception
Explore alternative narratives that honor their resilience and cultural strengths
Connect with intergenerational stories of survival, love, and joy
Externalize problems, recognizing that struggles like anxiety, depression, and racial trauma do not define who they are
Rewriting Our Stories, Reclaiming Our Power
Narrative Therapy offers a powerful way to decolonize mental health care by centering the lived experiences of communities of color. By reclaiming our stories, we reclaim our agency, our dignity, and our power. At the Aguirre Center for Inclusive Psychotherapy, we are honored to walk alongside our clients as they rewrite their narratives in ways that affirm their worth, honor their histories, and imagine liberatory futures.
