Queer Affirming Therapy; Counseling for LGBTQ

Authenticity, Empowerment

& Self-Acceptance

We understand that members of the LGBTQ+ community face many of the same mental health concerns as the general population, but they also have a set of unique challenges that other communities don’t.  Our queer and trans communities face unique stressors from living in a stigmatizing, heteronormative society.  Living authentically in a world that’s not built for queer and gender diverse people can feel overwhelming — even impossible — at times. The impact of growing up and living in a homophobic and transphobic family and a society that marginalizes LGBTQ+ people is profound.  Given the oppression, discrimination and stigma faced by the our community, it is not surprising that queer and trans people experience a disproportionate rate of mental health issues.

Unfortunately, traditional forms of therapy have often failed to provide appropriate support for our queer, trans and Q+BIPOC communities, which has, understandably, resulted in a lack of trust in mental health professionals and a reluctance to seek therapy.  Our LGBTQ+ affirming therapists seek to address these issues by creating a safe and inclusive environment where you  can  focus on the concerns that bring you to therapy without fear of judgment, invalidation, or discrimination.

We bring an anti-oppressive approach to therapy that emphasizes the importance of understanding the effects of power, privilege, and oppression on the lives of  our clients and our communities. Our affirming therapy practices can empower you to be your most authentic self and to develop a deeper understanding and acceptance of your unique intersecting identities. We can provide support in navigating family dynamics, social expectations, harmful norms, and while helping you build healthier relationships in your life – with your self, with others, and with your community. We strive to provide you with affirmation and validation through every step of your journey.

Meet our Queer-identified therapists

All of our therapists at the Aguirre Center for Inclusive Psychotherapy are queer allies, and most are also members of the LGBTQ+ communities. Many of us also live at the intersections of multiple marginalized identities, such as race and ethnicity, religion, and nuerodivergence.  While a lived queer-experience does not guarantee we will fully understand every aspect of your identity, what we can promise is that our our affirming therapists strive to see ALL of you and to truly understand ALL of your intersecting identities. We won’t ask you to educate us on the fundamentals of the LGBTQ+ experience and can ask deeper questions that move you forward. What we will do is hold all your identities, contexts, and the impact of oppression while addressing the issues that bring you to therapy.
