Understanding the Latinx Experience

At the Aguirre Center for Inclusive Psychotherapy, we understand that the Latinx community faces unique challenges when it comes to accessing mental health services. We know that a therapist that does not understand your culture, can never fully understand you. Cultural values, language barriers, and the stigma surrounding mental health can often make it difficult for Latinx individuals to seek the support they need. That’s why we are committed to providing culturally sensitive and inclusive therapy and counseling tailored specifically to the needs of our Latinx clients.

Cultural Competence. At the Aguirre Center for Inclusive Psychotherapy, we prioritize cultural competence in our practice, ensuring that our therapists are well-versed in the cultural dynamics that influence the Latinx community. The Latinx community is incredibly diverse, encompassing a wide range of cultural backgrounds, traditions, and experiences. However, there are common themes that often influence the mental health journey of Latinx individuals. Familismo, the strong value placed on family, and respeto, the importance of respect within relationships, are central to many Latinx cultures. While these values can provide a strong support network, they can also contribute to the pressure of maintaining appearances and not burdening others with personal struggles.

Language Matters. Language can be a significant barrier to accessing mental health services. For many Latinx clients, expressing emotions and discussing mental health in a language other than their native tongue can feel uncomfortable or even impossible. At the Aguirre Center, we offer bilingual therapy services to ensure that language is not a barrier to receiving quality care. Our bilingual therapists are not only fluent in Spanish, but also culturally competent, understanding the subtleties and nuances of communication within the Latinx community. This allows us to connect with clients on a deeper level and provide the support they need in a language that resonates with them.

Addressing Stigma in the Latinx Community. Stigma surrounding mental health is a significant barrier for many Latinx individuals. There is often a reluctance to seek help due to fear of being labeled as “crazy” or concern about how others in the community might perceive them. This stigma can be even more pronounced in older generations or in families that have recently immigrated to the United States, where mental health treatment may not have been readily accessible or socially accepted in their home country. Online therapy offers a level of privacy and discretion that can help mitigate some of these concerns. Clients can access therapy from the comfort of their own home, without the fear of being seen entering a therapist’s office.

Decolonizing, Affirming Therapy. Decolonized therapy is a framework of healing from the dehumanizing effects of colonization, white supremacy, and systemic oppression. We de-center mental health away from the dominant, white narrative, and instead, we  center our own rich familial, cultural, and ancestral wisdom, experiences, knowledge, and strengths. In this way, our culturally-affirming approach honors the cultural practices, traditions, and creativity that have enabled our Latinx communities to overcome oppression and build resilience.

At the Aguirre Center for Inclusive Psychotherapy, we are dedicated to serving the Latinx community with compassion, understanding, and respect. Our team of Latinx therapists understand first-hand the unique stressors that Latinx people face as they navigate the challenges living and working in a society that is embedded in systemic oppression. Using a collaborative, integrative  therapeutic approach, we will makes use of both our personal and professional experiences as a Latinx therapists, our extensive clinical experience working with Latinx/Hispanic & BIPOC individuals, AND your unique set of strengths and resources.
